Shanagarry Community Association Founded 2006 Registered Charity No. CH6865      We are preparing an Area Action Plan for the Village for presentation to Cork County Council in the Autumn. We need your views. It's all about ensuring the future development of Shanagarry as an attractive + thriving area for living, playing, working, shopping and visiting. A proactive, community‐led plan is more likely to succeed than if we simply sit back and wait for the County Council to ‘sort things out’. As the Council will be receiving hundreds of submissions, ours must stand out. Be part of it. Have your say. Shanagarry, meaning Old Garden, is the birthplace of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania State.
It is now more famous for Ballymaloe House and Darina Allen’s Cookery School and Gardens. This is also the home village of the Russell Rovers hurling and football team, and of St. Coleman's Amateur Boxing Club. Shanagarry has clean sandy beaches that are ideal for swimming and angling, and are a paradise for birdwatchers.
Summer Newsletter 2010 The highlight of recent activity in Shanagarry has been the re-opening of both the Old Pottery and the Emporium under the new ownership of both Jack O Patsy and the Killkenny Design Company. In current times this is indeed a blessing for the area in term of jobs and attracting people to the area. The Community Association has again entered the Tidy Towns and are hoping to improve on the solid last place we got last year. Upcoming events for the Association. · Fund raising Pub Quiz in the Goalpost on Saturday night the 22nd May @ 9.30 to help out Kate Kearney (Shuulagh's daughter) who is currently undergoing treatment in Dublin and Cork. € 20 per table and excellent prizes on the night. · EGM of Association to investigate the possibility of combining the Parks Committee and the Community Association .This is to be held on the 1st June @9.00 pm in the GAA hall. All are welcome. This is your chance to improve the area you live in. · Building of old style garden opposite Church. Thanks to Rossa O Connell for her design work on the centre piece for the Village. · The annual Fete is again going ahead with some new attractions including Pottery Demo, Pet show and some extra Food Stalls. This is going ahead on Sunday the 20th June. · Tidy up of village area on Wednesday the 9th June @ 6.30 concentrating on the Park. All are welcome and please bring along basic gardening equipment. The stunning success of the Shanagarry GIY organisation continues this week with a talk by J Mc Keowan on how to feed a family from three raised beds. Eileen will again give her top ten monthly tips and Eimear Fitzgerald will be showing how to get children involved with a small start up garden. As usual the meeting takes place on the last Tuesday of the month in the GAA hall at 8.00 pm. To date a very high calibre of guest speaker has been present. With all abilities catered for this is proving to be very popular with both experienced and new gardeners. The recent trip to the Glasshouses of Ballymaloe organised by Darina would have encouraged some and made others wonder about how to attain that level in their allotment.
The Irish Countrywomen's Association nationally is celebrating its centenary this year and will look back on the achievements of the organisation. Many events have been organised and a special commemorative stamp has recently been issued. Some members of the Shanagarry ICA Guild are joining a tour to Wexford in early May to take part in the celebrations at Bree where the organisation was founded in 1910. To mark the event all the guilds in Cork Federation will join together for a Garden Party at Fota House on 19th June where the Army Band of the Southern Command will provide some of the entertainment. The Shanagarry ladies are looking forward to donning their finery and hats for the garden party and using the event for their annual outing. Lets hope the sun shines. We welcome all newcomers in a spirit of friendship. Our meetings are held on the second Monday of the month in the GAA Rooms in Shanagarry. It has been a very busy and successful few months for the club. Tom Mc Grath won the All-Ireland University Championships which were held in the National Stadium in Dublin. Tom representing UCC boxed brilliantly, winning comfortably in the final of the middle weight division. This is Tom’s second All-Ireland, he won the under 21 middle weight crown a few years ago. St Colman’s second All-Ireland title within a month came when young Adam Curley won the Boy 12 48kg title. Adam had to win the County title, then went on to win the Munster title before getting to the All-Irelands, where he had to win 3 very tough bouts. In his semi-final he won on a countback while in the final he won by 2 points. This was a remarkable achievement. Shane (Warrior) O’Neill also won the County and Munster titles before going out narrowly in the quarter-final of the All-Irelands. Shane is improving all of the time and hopefully next year he will go a step further. We had another very successful tournament, which was held in the Walter Raleigh Hotel, where a big crowd witnessed some very exciting contests. The Club would like to thank all of the people who supported the club with their generous sponsorship again this year. Barry Walsh and Aaron O’Connor will be boxing in the All-Ireland Junior Championships in 2 weeks time so hopefully we will have more good news to report then. Thanks to Susan Kelly for this.
