Shanagarry, meaning Old Garden, is the birthplace of William Penn, founder of Pennsylvania State.

It is now more famous for Ballymaloe House and Darina Allen’s Cookery School and Gardens. This is also the home village of the Russell Rovers hurling and football team, St Colmans ladies football club and of St. Coleman's Amateur Boxing Club.

Shanagarry has clean sandy beaches that are ideal for swimming and angling, and are a paradise for birdwatchers.
